They call it the digital divide but it is better known as the Digital Divide, which is the English term for the lack of technological infrastructure in an area or territory. It is not just an Italian lack, but surely this is no reason to console ourselves. For an endless series of issues, economic, monopolistic and governmental (even at the regional level) for years we have been dragging our feet in a situation that puts some areas of the country at a distinct disadvantage compared to others. But the digital divide does not only mean that there are people who cannot access the Internet from their homes or businesses, it also means backwardness and obsolescence of infrastructure (both public and private) and what makes it work properly: networks, computers and software, which too often have not been updated for some time. This situation makes them easy prey for cyber criminals who use increasingly sophisticated tools and methods instead. Better then not to open what is a real Pandora’s box for Italy, namely the lack of unified and centralized public administration databases for the whole country, a situation that fuels inefficiencies and increases bureaucracy.
High ranking
In a world where digital technologies are not the future but the present, it is no coincidence that Italy has long been sailing in the top ranks among the countries most targeted by cyber attacks. Unfortunately, in many cases, cybersecurity budgets as well as those for compliance with certifications and GDPR are perceived as a wasted investment, without actually realizing the damage that planned cyber attacks can cause. EY (one of the four largest auditing firms in the financial industry) known for its accurate cybersecurity reports, indicates that more than 62 percent of Italian companies have experienced cybersecurity problems and that more than 90 percent of companies allocate inadequate resources to technology protection. Although results for the just-concluded 2019 are awaited, the picture that emerges is not the rosiest. According to Accenture‘s report, The State of Cyber Resilience, are only the leading companies that invest more than 10 percent of their IT budgets in cybersecurity, and often without achieving the expected results. In fact, there is a disturbing statistic regarding response times to attacks, which, even for companies with excellent levels of protection, can reach recovery times of 15 days. In addition to possible damages for data theft and privacy, this means additional costs and lost revenue for the forced shutdown.
The practice of redemption
Adding concern is the prediction that massive attacks by ransomware, a type of malware that restricts access to data, are on the horizon during the 2020s. This devious practice allows cybercriminals to make data inaccessible, then demand a ransom to remove the restrictions and “free” the data. These attacks could be a big problem for health care companies, hospitals, laboratories and, of course, public administrations such as municipalities that guard data for the operation of the public machine. To counter these attacks (in addition to a high level of protection), updates of IT “tools,” an adjustment to certifications are needed, and more training is needed to avoid mistakes made by the “human factor.” Obviously, not all companies or public administrations have adequate internal facilities to take care of these elements. That is why relying on a managed security service provider (MSSP) such as Hypergrid is the right choice for investing in your company’s security. Hypergrid provides customers with the latest technologies to make sure that network services and infrastructure are usable and secure, all without the need for the enterprise to take care of it itself.
